In the Spotlight – Steve Dunlap
Steve Dunlap of My Brother’s Barber at Salon Suites Vestavia Hills grew up in Birmingham and had always been the creative type. He cut his own hair and did all types of styles on his own hair when he was younger, but his drive to become a barber came a little later in life. From 1999 to 2001 he performed volunteer work in Brooklyn, New York. As a volunteer money can be tight and volunteers often have to come up with inventive ways to be fashionable, trendy, and groomed. Steve was no different from many others before him and his inventive solution to being stylish was to cut his own hair. This money saving solution also was inspired by wasting resources paying barbers or friends to cut his hair and coming out with a less than stellar outcome. He thought instead of paying others to mess up his hair he could do it for free. He bought his first pair of clippers for five dollars and after a few failed self attempts at cutting his own hair he started to improve. He realized he truly had a knack for it and upon returning to Birmingham he went to school for it. He now has 15 years experience and prides himself on, not only providing an excellent cut, but also on providing an excellent service. He knows what it is like to be the customer and never wants his client to have a poor experience. Moving forward he will be focusing on improving and strengthening his specialties of fades, beards, fauxhawks, mohawks, and growing his clientele.
“My specialties are fades, beards, fauxhawks, mohawks, and there are a lot of terminology, but if you can grow it I can cut it.”
A part of his client experience is the family atmosphere at My Brother’s Barber. As the name implies, Steve co-owns My Brother’s Barber, with his brother, Jonathan Dunlap. Being in business with his brother is a rewarding experience for Steve. They know each other in and out and can provide support when the other needs it and care about one another’s clients.
“We can be ourselves. I know him, he knows me. We have the same values, and I really believe we have a good template that we can build on.”
Steve has had many of the same clients for years and years and cherishes each memory they have made and shared together, but the best compliment might surprise you. He says the best compliment he receives is when his clients leave their hats. Forgetting that you even came in with a hat is the true testament to how much you love your new look. You can beam with pride and walk right out the doors of My Brother’s Barber knowing that you will look fashionable and polished.
One great tip from this professional barber is at the end of the video and deals with how to confront the ever burdensome razor burn so be sure to watch the video and share with your friends and family.
